I just found out I'm pregnant...what do I do now? - Essential First Steps to Take After Discovering Your Pregnancy

Are you asking "I just found out I'm pregnant...what do I do now?" Take a deep breath. You don't have to have everything figured out today.

Finding out you're pregnant can bring every emotion imaginable. Maybe you've been hoping for this moment for years. Maybe it came as a complete surprise. Maybe you're excited, nervous, overwhelmed—or all three at the same time.

However you're feeling, know this:

You don't have to know everything right now.

Pregnancy isn't about having all the answers on day one. It's about taking one step at a time.

As a birth doula, one of the most common questions I hear is:

"I just found out I'm pregnant...what do I do now?"

Here's where I encourage families to start.

1. Confirm Your Pregnancy

If you've taken a home pregnancy test, schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to confirm the pregnancy.

Depending on your insurance and preferences, this may be with:

  • An OB-GYN

  • A Certified Nurse Midwife

  • A Family Practice provider

  • A Community Health Clinic

Your first visit usually includes confirming the pregnancy, estimating how far along you are, reviewing your medical history, and discussing next steps.

Remember—this first appointment isn't just for your provider to learn about you.

It's also your opportunity to learn about them.

Do you feel heard?

Do they answer your questions?

Do you feel respected?

Those things matter.

2. Start Taking a Prenatal Vitamin

Even before your first appointment, it's a good idea to begin taking a prenatal vitamin if you haven't already.

Many prenatal vitamins contain important nutrients like:

  • Folic Acid

  • Iron

  • Vitamin D

  • DHA

  • Calcium

Nutrition during pregnancy doesn't have to be perfect. Focus on nourishing your body one meal at a time and staying hydrated.

Small, consistent choices make a difference.

3. Learn About Your Pregnancy

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is education.

Not because you need to memorize everything.

But because understanding what's happening inside your body can replace fear with confidence.

Instead of spending hours scrolling social media, find trusted sources that explain pregnancy, birth, and postpartum in a way that helps you feel informed—not overwhelmed.

Knowledge helps you make decisions that align with your values.

4. Start Thinking About Your Birth Team

Most people immediately think about choosing a doctor or midwife.

But your birth team can include much more than that.

Consider who you want supporting you throughout pregnancy and birth.

Your team may include:

  • Your partner

  • Family or friends

  • A doula

  • Your healthcare provider

  • A childbirth educator

  • Lactation support

  • Mental health professionals if needed

You deserve support that extends beyond medical appointments.

5. Schedule Time to Ask Questions

Pregnancy comes with a lot of advice.

Some of it is helpful.

Some of it isn't.

Instead of trying to learn everything at once, keep a running list of questions as they come up.

Bring them to your prenatal appointments.

Talk them through with your doula.

Read reputable resources.

Curiosity is a strength—not something to feel embarrassed about.

6. Don't Forget to Enjoy This Season

It's easy to jump straight into planning.

Registries.

Baby names.

Nursery themes.

Birth plans.

And while all of those things have their place, don't forget to pause.

Celebrate this new chapter.

Take a picture.

Journal your thoughts.

Share the news when you're ready.

Pregnancy isn't just about preparing for a baby.

It's also about preparing to become the parent your baby needs.

A Gentle Reminder

You do not have to know everything this week.

You don't need to buy every baby gadget.

You don't need to have the perfect birth plan.

And you certainly don't need to compare your journey to someone else's.

Take one step.

Then another.

You are already growing your baby one day at a time.

You can prepare the same way.
